About Panama City

Panama City covers an area of 106.2 sq. miles (275 sq. Km) and is estimated to have a population of 1.2 million people being the capital and largest city of the Republic of Panama. Panama has been for 7 years in the top 5 places for retirement in the world.

Museo Afroantillano

A small museum housed in the 1910-era Iglesia de la Misión Cristiana, the Museo Afroantillano (Afro-Antillian Museum) pays tribute to the more than 30,000 West Indians who represented 85% of all foreign laborers during the building of the canal. Afro-Antillians were relegated to the most menial and treacherous of all work, and many lost their lives in the process.

Within the museum are reconstructed examples of their poor living quarters, and there are old photos and other antiques from the early 1900s. It takes about 20 minutes to see everything; which is good because the neighborhood here is awfully sketchy, and doesn’t induce you to linger or wander around. Take a cab directly to and from here.
